Pursuing a career in education has allowed me opportunities I never thought possible. As an Adolescent English teacher, I get to immerse myself in an environment in which I can encourage learning and leave a lasting impact on countless bright minds. My goal in the classroom is to inspire enthusiasm for literature old and new, in the hopes of leaving students with the critical reading and writing skills needed for success in both the classroom, and the world waiting for them just outside school doors.
In teaching, I work to please more than just myself. With a concentration in the English language and all of its inner workings, I not only get the chance to help the minds of today thrive, but I also get to influence and shape the intellects of the future. English is a subject that is all-encompassing, lending itself to all other content areas. What better way to make history than by teaching the next generation of great scientists, novelists, or even the future President of the United States, how to cultivate their thoughts and ideas and put their brilliance into words. Reading and writing are the fundamental tools to college and career readiness, regardless of which field one intends to make their mark on, and as a teacher I get the reward of aiding my students in the process.
In my classroom, I encourage freedom of thought and diversity. All students are validated and accepted for who they are, and what they believe in. Like John Dewey, I truly believe my responsibility as an educator is to nurture and guide my students through the journey of enlightenment, but ultimately, let them find their own way. Having the liberty to explore and discover on one’s own keeps learning fresh and exciting; after all, education is not the mere memorization and repetition of textbook material, but the ability to understand said material and apply it to enhance one’s experiences in the real world. I will help my students recognize the eager learners within themselves, using a wide range of technology to keep their learning current and interesting. As a reflective practitioner, I will not only measure the growth of my students, but I will strive towards growth in myself and my profession.
I believe in lifelong learning. As an educator, I encourage growth in my students both in, and outside of the classroom. In addition to challenging my students, I continually challenge myself in being a more positive role model for my learners, each and every day. As I guide my students through the learning process, I hope to have an impact not only their minds, but their hearts as well, encouraging them to never stop asking questions and chasing their dreams.
